South Aris

South Aris

In 1996, Nichiai agreed to sponsor the "South Aris Expedition" which attempted to retrace one of the greatest journeys ever undertaken - the 1915 lifeboat voyage by Ernest Shackleton, Tom Crean and a few other explorers in a tiny lifeboat across 800 inhospitable miles of the Southern Ocean from Elephant Island to South Georgia and then, on foot, over the island's barren mountains and glaciers to a whaling station to get help for the crew of their ship the "Endurance" which was crushed in the ice.

The "Tom Crean", the expedition's replica of the original lifeboat - which was named after the original boat's navigator - in the Southern Ocean.
